Mielle Chénier-Cowan Rosehas been a natural foods chef and advocate for natural living for over 20 years. She completed the nutritional culinary program at Bauman College in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2000 and continues to draw inspiration from the healing properties of food.
She self-published the first version of Veganish in 2011 as Piece of My Heart while giving up her 20-year long vegetarian diet to heal her young daughter’s tooth decay with nutrient-dense, animal-based foods. The third edition of POMH was released in the summer of 2019. Mielle has seen that food heals—body, mind and spirit—and she strives to integrate compassionate food choices with the realization that some animal-based foods are an important element of her family’s diet. Her meals and culinary writing radiate with the uncommon reverence she has for her ingredients, for cooking, and for every being on the planet. |
Mielle lives with her daughter in the Sierra foothills of Northern California, where she’s delighted to draw inspiration from a community of talented farmers and foodies. Her catering business Piece of My Heart Kitchen serves thoughtful, nourishing meals made with love and seasonal, organic ingredients for retreats and special events. She has catered for world-renowned retreat centers and yoga instructors, and loves to provide mindful sustenance for a group's inner work over the course of a program.
In addition to operating Piece of My Heart Kitchen, Mielle recently joined Bright Futures for Youth as their Kitchen and Nutrition Program Manager, and is excited to bring her experience to serve the youth of Nevada County. Throughout her career, she has helped operate, open and expand many natural food ventures including the Macrobiotic Cafe in Oakland, the Cafe Gratitude restaurants in the SF Bay Area, and most recently she was the chef at Heartwood Eatery and opened the Heartwood Annex Noodle Bar in Nevada City, CA in 2021. She strives to contribute to her community's wholesome food systems and has served on the Nevada County Food Policy Council and as a liaison between Nevada City School of the Arts and Mountain Bounty Farm for Sierra Harvest's Farm-to-School program. She occasionally teaches private cooking classes, consults about food and nutrition, and keeps her kitchen at home teeming with interesting projects.
Mielle's meals were once compared to the excitement of an amusement park ride, and she enjoys the challenge of living up to the compliment!
